What Sets the Internal Medicine Residency Program Apart

Teaching Opportunities

Inpatient teams will be joined by physician assistant (PA) students, third year medical students and Sub-I’s. The intern typically works closely with a PA student or medical student assigned to the team, while Sub-I’s are assigned to work primarily with the team’s resident. The intern will teach and model for the student how to appropriately obtain a complete patient history, perform a thorough physical exam, create a comprehensive patient problem list, develop an organized differential diagnosis and develop an appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic plan.

Medium-sized Program which has a Family Atmosphere

One of the advantages of the MacNeal Internal Medicine Residency Program is that we are a medium-sized program where everyone knows each other. We aspire to create a family-like atmosphere amongst our residents and faculty, with a social event at the end of each rotation, an annual resident retreats and social gatherings throughout the year.

Primary Care Electives

These elective rotations provide residents with an opportunity to experience a variety of disciplines including office orthopaedics, allergy and immunology, addiction medicine, urogynecology, dermatology, ophthalmology and others which support the practice of outpatient medicine.

Away Rotation

At MacNeal, residents have the opportunity to do two away rotations. Away rotations provide residents with the opportunity to explore fellowship interests and to build relationships with professors at the institution at which the resident is rotating.

In addition to a clinical away rotation, residents also have the opportunity to go away for an international rotation of their choosing or to have an elective rotation in research.
